Best and Worst Teams in Close Games (8/4/2004)
The following table shows the difference between each team's record in one-run games and their
record in games decided by more than one run. Teams with a positive number in the difference (Diff)
column have a higher propensity for winning close games. Teams with a negative number in the
difference column have a higher propensity for losing close games. Call it luck or call it a lack
of ability in the clutch, but the Red Sox are by far the worst team in major league baseball when it
comes to winning close games. It should come as no surprise that the other cursed organization,
the Cubs, are the second worst.
I performed the same analysis late in the 2002 season. The Red Sox had the worst differential
between one-run games and games decided by two or more runs during that season as well. This data
shows that it is painful to be a Red Sox fan all the time, not simply in October. To see the 2002
